New Sepalcure video is amazing.
Nevermind that these two just might be playing a GALAPAGOS showcase in late December….

Kevin McPhee - Blue Organ EP

Local boy Kevin McPhee is set to drop another stellar EP, this time on Hypercolour off-shoot HypeLtd.

Here’s the blurb:

Following on from the likes of Maya Jane Coles and T.Williams, next to release on ever cultured Hypercolour off shoot HypeLtd is Toronto beatsmith Kevin McPhee. With releases on labels like Idle Hands and [nakedlunch] in 2011, this man has established himself as one of the finest and freshest producers of the year.

Here turning in four more original cuts, McPhee’s fascination with house apparently continues apace. Opener ‘I Will’ has gorgeously under-lapping beats, teary-eyed melodies and dreamy female vocals all rolling along together in sombre harmony. Variously being peeled back to just the chords, just the vocal or just the scuffed beats, it’s a track that remains forever swollen with an unspoken sadness, despite making decent progress.

‘Hang My Head’ is less dreamy and more gnarled round the edges. Punching along at an inviting mid-tempo, a buried bassline gets busy as louche beats echo in the spaces above. It’s hollow and suggestive, where ‘Your Side’ returns to a more mopey and insular vibe. Here the kicks trudge along, a mildly euphoric male vocal floating in between them and some long tailed, churchy synths leaving a trail in their wake. It’s beautifully melancholic; cautiously optimistic…

‘Blue Organ’ again sounds distant, instilling a dreamy, hypnagogic kinda vibe to the smeared tones and edgeless kicks which otherwise spread out in every direction. Even the percussion is murky and half remembered, veiled with years of dust that also obscures the sound of some nimble fingers which begin to dance up and down a piano toward the end of the record.

McPhee very much has his own fine grain analogue aesthetic… this most delightful EP only confirms that.

You’re going to want to keep your eye on this one…

New video for Com Truise - “Brokendate”. Below is a blurb taken from the Ghostly Vimeo page:

Music as evocative as the stuff made by Com Truise—master of the transporting synth odyssey—necessitates videos that are nothing short of cinematic. Hence the fully blown-out treatment for “Brokendate,” which rolls everything from eighties cop noir to Blade Runner retro-futurism to slo-mo Hype Williams nods into one five-minute world unto itself.
Says previous collaborator and director Will Joines of 10 lb Pictures: “While I was cutting the ‘Fairlight’ video earlier in the year I kept thinking that it was fun, but if I ever had the opportunity to actually film something for one of Com Truise’s songs then I could really go all out and create this whole world that would be specifically tailored to his music.” Mission accomplished.

Tim Hoover - More Napkins

Tim Hoover has dropped the “Co-op” nickname and released a forward-thinking collection of music which straddles the line between DJ mix and instrumental album. Drawing samples and inspiration from a handful of both well-known and obscure tracks, Hoover composed 60 minutes of original music divided into 5 movements which sit together as a cohesive piece. Samples and melodies are introduced and referenced later in the piece, as the tempo, colour and even time signature shifts from track to track. Drawing inspiration from the slow building violin melodies of groups like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, as well as the frenetic chopped drums of Prefuse 73, More Napkins is the perfect “headphone album,” rewarding the listener with new surprises on each listen.
