LUCKY YOU PT. 1 - ANGO

Leading up to the Galapagos/LuckyMe showcase this Saturday, I decided to do a quick snapshot of each of the acts performing as an introduction for those not familiar, and to set the tone for those who are.
First up: ANGO. We are so fortunate to have this guy added to the bill as he just happens to be in town. The label had this to say about his recent mixtape:

Andrew Gordon Mcpherson aka ANGO delivers one of the most satisfying RnB selections of the year, just sneaking-her-in for the final week. This tape is all smiles. Can’t wait to hear what 2011 holds for him as he gears up with a debut record and very likely a host of other releases and remixes with fellow labels. Keep an eye on ANGO, cause his electronic soul music tinged with hip hop, house and disco might well offer an overdue alternative to the reverb’d swathes of melancholy that defined 2010.

This one must’ve slipped by Dougie last week when he did his DAKOTA post, but this guy/girl/group/whatever is back with another cool track complete with weird found footage in tow. This latest offering doesnt seem to come with a title, but it starts off with a True Romance-esque pan-flute/xylophone (or something) and quickly drops into the big reverb-y-drums+synth sound I’ve come to expect from my favourite mystery musician.
Thumbs up.

Moombahton on BBC Radio One

My dude Dave Nada recently did an hour-long takeover of Benji B‘s weekly BBC radio show Exploring Future Beats showcasing the emergent genre of Moombahton. Click the link below to hear the full audio segment along with interviews about it’s origin alongside fellow champions of the sound Munchi and Diplo.

Mixtape Massacre Final Episode

With the closing of CKLN comes the end of Mixtape Massacre, the spiritual successor to the Fantastic Voyage & Powermove shows, (helmed by Ron Nelson and DJ X respectively). Since the mid 80’s community radio in Toronto has always played a critical role in the hip hop scene’s development. The fact that these guys kept the tradition going up until now is more than commendable. You can hear their thoughts on the situation at the Grand Groove blog.

LUNICE - Astronamus (Limited Download)

Available to download for only 72 hours is a new track by Lunice called “Astronomus “. It was created for Safewalls (a street art project curated by Cirque Du Soleil).
The track itself is a hectic, head-rattling, blippy mess punctuated by with random sound bites and a creeping 8-bit melody. And don’t forget that Lunice will be playing alongside a whole slew of his LuckyMe cohorts for our sixth Galapagos night next Saturday at The Drake Underground, so dont hit the snooze button.
